Reading gas management findings on a landfill CAR
Landfill gas collection, flare operation, wellfield tuning and surface monitoring appear as permit conditions — and as CAR rows when officers find gaps during inspection. Operators read these lines to see which control measure failed on the published form, not to redesign the gas field. This guide is CAR literacy only.

Where gas rows sit on the CAR
Assessed areas may include:
- Landfill gas management / LFTGN compliance
- Gas collection and utilisation systems
- Surface emissions monitoring
- Flare and enclosed flare operation
Link each row to permit conditions — linking CAR findings to permit conditions.
Common breach descriptions
| CAR wording pattern | Plain-English reading |
|---|---|
| Gas extraction wells not operating effectively | Collection efficiency below permit expectation |
| Flare not available / out of service | Control route unavailable |
| Surface monitoring not undertaken | Scheduled survey missed |
| Positive gas findings at perimeter | Migration pathway concern cited |
| LFTGN records incomplete | Management and reporting breach |
Gas vs leachate vs closure rows
- Gas management — methane control (this guide).
- Leachate — liquid systems — leachate management findings.
- Closure and aftercare — long-term gas control — site closure and restoration findings.
Active cells may show gas and leachate breaches on the same CAR — read each line separately.
Monitoring overlap
Gas monitoring data may also appear under generic monitoring rows — monitoring data findings, emissions monitoring findings. Note the condition number on each row.
Scoring and response actions
See C3, C4, what CCS scores mean. Deadlines: CAR response deadlines. CARBrief organises published wording; we do not operate flares or represent operators in enforcement — what happens after a CAR.
Questions
What gas management breaches appear on landfill CARs?
Common rows cite gas collection system performance, flare availability, wellfield monitoring gaps, surface emissions surveys, or LFTGN compliance. Each line should reference permit conditions on the public register.
How is gas management different from leachate rows?
Gas rows focus on methane control, extraction wells and flares. Leachate rows focus on liquid collection and disposal — though both may appear on the same landfill CAR.
Will CARBrief operate gas control systems?
No. CARBrief reads published CAR wording. Gas field engineering and permit variation are for specialist consultants — see when to vary your permit.
